Research Associate-MITRE (CT2739)

Type: Education & Research | Department: Mechanical Engineering | Location: Bath | Closing Date: 30 Oct 2014 | The Powertrain and Vehicle Research Centre (PVRC) at the University of Bath has an international reputation in conducting theoretical, experimental and analytical research into vehicle powertrain systems. We are seeking a post-doctoral Research Associate to lead an exciting new project to develop a Micro Gas Turbine Range Extender Powerplant. The project is sponsored by the Technology Strategy Board and led by Delta Motorsport in collaboration with the University of Bath and three other companies. Thus, the role will require an individual who is capable of interacting with industrial partners and presenting the research findings at regular meetings. This project aims to develop a compact, gas-turbine power unit to enable greater range from an electric vehicle. The role of the University of Bath will be to test the performance of the components that make up the gas turbine engine in a specialist laboratory capable of high temperature gaseous tests. Thus since much of the work will be laboratory based, it is expected that the candidate should have a strong experimental background. In addition, much of the development of component understanding will be achieved from Computation Fluid Dynamics which will be validated by the experimental data. Thus, experience in CFD simulation will be valuable. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating all of the experimental and simulation activities for this project. Candidates should hold a PhD in an Engineering discipline, be very near to completion or have significant relevant industrial experience. Experience in the experimentation and simulation of radial turbomachinery or small gas turbines will be an advantage. Candidates should be self-motivated and possess project management and technical communication skills. This post is being offered on a Fixed Term Contract basis, to end no later than 30 October 2015. Please include a detailed CV, an abstract of your PhD and a representative academic paper as part of your application.
